Guaiacol appears as white or slightly yellow crystals or colorless to light yellow transparent oily liquid. It has a distinctive scent. It is slightly soluble in water and benzene, also easily soluble in glycerol. And it is miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, oil and glacier acetic acid. Guaiacol is a phenolic natural product first isolated from Guaiac resin and the oxidation of lignin. It is also present in wood smoke, as a product of pyrolysis of lignin.

Guaiacol is widely used in industry. It is often used to produce various flavors, such as eugenol, vanillin and artificial musk. Guaiacol is also widely used in medicine. It can be used to synthesize guaiacol benzenesulfonate (potassium guaiacolsulfonate), used as a local anesthetic or preservative, and can also be used to remove phlegm and treat indigestion. Because it has reducing properties, it is often added in small amounts to cosmetics as an antioxidant and is often used together with synergists, metal ion chelators, etc. Guaiacol is also used as a dye because it reacts with oxygen to produce a dark color.
