1. Participates in cellular energy metabolism
As a redox cofactor: During processes such as glycolysis, citric acid cycle (tricarboxylic acid cycle), oxidative phosphorylation, etc., NAD+ accepts hydrogen and electrons, converting into NADH, converting the chemical energy in nutrients into ATP (cellular energy currency).
Example: Each molecule of glucose metabolized through aerobic respiration can produce approximately 30-32 molecules of ATP, with multiple steps relying on the participation of NAD+.
