Its reactivity and unique structure make it a key raw material in the fields of polymer synthesis and fine chemicals. The applications of 2-Acrylonitrile [Stabilized] focus on "polymer synthesis" and "fine chemical preparation", relying primarily on the polymerization reaction of the double bond and the derivative reactions of the cyano group (-CN).

At room temperature, it is a colorless and transparent liquid with a strong pungent odor (similar to the smell of bitter almonds). It has a low odor threshold (approximately 0.35 ppm), so even a small amount of leakage can be easily detected; it must be handled in a closed fume hood.

Volatility and Solubility

It has a boiling point of 77.3°C and is highly volatile at room temperature (vapor pressure: 13.3 kPa at 22°C). Its vapor density is higher than that of air (relative density: 1.83), so it tends to accumulate in low-lying areas. It is miscible with water (solubility: 7.3% at 20°C), ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene, and most other organic solvents; a small amount of heat is released when mixed with water.

Hazards

It has a flash point of -5°C (closed cup) and is classified as a Class A flammable liquid. Its vapor can form an explosive mixture when mixed with air (explosion limit: 3.0%–17.0% by volume). It is prone to crystallization at low temperatures (<0°C) (melting point: -83.6°C); after crystallization, it must be melted by slow heating to avoid localized overheating that may trigger polymerization.

The carbon-carbon double bond (C=C) is prone to free radical polymerization and copolymerization reactions, which is the core basis for its use as a polymer monomer. Without added stabilizers, it will undergo rapid self-polymerization when exposed to heat (>80°C), light, or initiators (e.g., peroxides), and may even cause uncontrolled exothermic reactions leading to explosive polymerization.

The cyano group (-CN) has strong polarity and can undergo hydrolysis (forming acrylic acid), reduction (forming propylamine), and addition (forming cyanohydrins with alcohols) reactions, providing possibilities for fine chemical derivation.
