What is ARA 290?

ARA 290, also known as cibinetide, is an 11-amino acid peptide that has potent tissue-protective and tissue-regenerative properties. It is called "nonhematopoietic peptide" because ARA 290 exerts its beneficial effects without stimulating erythropoesis or red blood cell production. Preclinical and clinical studies have shown that by selectively interacting with the innate repair receptor, ARA 290 mediates tissue protection.

ARA-290 is a peptide that is derived from e rythropoietin (EPO). EPO has been utilized for decades because of its ability to stimulate red blood cell production within bone marrow. It can also alter a patient's blood pressure, promote cell survival, and create a neuroprotective effect.ARA is an EPO derivative peptide (undecene peptide with a pyrroglutamate residue at the N-terminus). EPO has been used for decades because it stimulates erythropoiesis in the bone marrow. It also alters blood pressure, promotes cell survival, and produces neuroprotective effects.

While ARA-290 does not stimulate red blood cell production, it does offer pain-relieving and neuroprotective effects.
It also has the potential to stimulate wound repair in patients with chronic diabetes, but this property is still being researched.

By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 restores mitochondrial bioenergetics, reduces cytochrome c peroxidase activity, and prevents oxidative damage in cells with impaired mitochondrial function.

Activity note:

SS-31 does not act via traditional receptor agonism. It binds cardiolipin with high selectivity in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Functional EC₅₀ values are context-dependent (cell type, stress model). Key electrophysiology studies report mitochondrial membrane potential restoration at nanomolar concentrations.
