Methyl acetate is used as a fast-drying solvent for nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate, and is applied in paint coatings. It is also employed in the manufacture of artificial leather and fragrances, as well as an extractor for fats. Additionally, it serves as a raw material for the production of dyes and pharmaceuticals. Methyl acetate is used as a standard substance for chromatographic analysis and as an organic solvent (for nitrocellulose, oils, resins, and varnishes), and it is also utilized in the separation of lithium chloride from alkali metal chlorides and in fragrance synthesis. GB 2760-1996 stipulates that methyl acetate is a permitted food flavoring substance.
