Detailed Technical Description of Sodium Acetate (for Sewage Treatment)

    I. Basic Product Information

Sodium Acetate, with the chemical name sodium acetate, has molecular formulas of CH₃COONa (anhydrous) and CH₃COONa·3H₂O (trihydrate), and molecular weights of 82.03 (anhydrous) and 136.08 (trihydrate) respectively. Its CAS numbers are 6131-90-4 (anhydrous) and 6131-90-4 (trihydrate), and it belongs to the class of inorganic acid salt compounds. In the field of sewage treatment, sodium acetate is mainly used as an external carbon source, pH buffer, and sludge conditioner. It exists in two forms: solid (trihydrate crystal, anhydrous) and liquid. It has the characteristics of non-toxicity, easy solubility, and strong biodegradability. It is one of the most commonly used and safest external carbon sources in sewage treatment at present, and is widely applied in the biochemical treatment processes of municipal sewage and industrial wastewater, especially suitable for denitrification treatment of sewage with low carbon-nitrogen ratio and stable regulation of biochemical systems.

    II. Product Usage Characteristics

    (1) Core Usage

    1. Denitrification and Nitrogen Removal (Primary Usage)

In the biological nitrogen removal process of wastewater treatment, when the natural carbon source (such as BOD) in the wastewater is insufficient and the carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N < 4), denitrifying bacteria cannot fully reduce nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻) and nitrite nitrogen (NO₂⁻) into nitrogen gas (N₂) for discharge, resulting in excessive total nitrogen (TN) in the effluent. As a small-molecule and easily degradable carbon source, sodium acetate can directly serve as an electron donor for denitrifying bacteria, be quickly absorbed and utilized by microorganisms, accelerate the denitrification process, and significantly improve nitrogen removal efficiency. It is a core agent for solving the problem of nitrogen removal in wastewater with a low carbon-nitrogen ratio. Its denitrification rate is faster than that of glucose, and its startup speed is better than that of methanol. It can effectively assist wastewater treatment plants in upgrading and transforming (such as TN ≤ 15/10mg/L). It is suitable for municipal wastewater treatment plants, as well as the treatment of high-nitrogen and low-BOD wastewater in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries, and for enhancing nitrogen removal in processes such as MBR and denitrification filters.

    2.Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal

In the biological phosphorus removal process, sodium acetate can assist the function of phosphorus-accumulating bacteria: in the anaerobic stage, phosphorus-accumulating bacteria absorb acetic acid produced by the decomposition of sodium acetate, synthesize polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and release the phosphorus stored in their bodies; in the aerobic stage, phosphorus-accumulating bacteria decompose PHA to obtain energy, excessively absorb phosphorus in wastewater, and finally achieve phosphorus removal through sludge discharge. Adding sodium acetate can improve the stability of phosphorus removal, which is especially suitable for biochemical treatment systems with insufficient carbon sources, reducing fluctuations in phosphorus removal efficiency caused by carbon source deficiency and lowering the risk of excessive phosphorus content in effluent.

    1. 3.Maintaining sludge activity and system stability

Sodium acetate can provide sufficient energy and carbon sources for heterotrophic bacteria in sewage, effectively preventing sludge aging and bulking, and maintaining the good settling performance and biological activity of sludge. When the biochemical system encounters abnormal conditions such as fluctuations in influent load, low-temperature environment, and toxic impact, adding sodium acetate can quickly supplement the carbon source, help microorganisms restore their activity, stabilize the operation of the biochemical system, reduce the risk of system paralysis, and lower operation and maintenance costs. Experiments have shown that the use of high-quality sodium acetate can increase the denitrification rate of the sewage treatment system to more than 82%, reduce chemical consumption by 30%, and at the same time reduce sludge production (20%-30% lower than glucose), alleviating the pressure of subsequent sludge disposal.

    1. 4.pH Buffering and Water Quality Regulation

Aqueous sodium acetate solution is weakly alkaline (with a pH of approximately 8-9). Its acetate ions and acetic acid can form a buffer system (CH₃COONa/CH₃COOH), which can neutralize the hydrogen ions (H⁺) produced by the nitrification reaction in sewage. This stabilizes the pH value of the water body within the range of 6.5-8.5, which is suitable for microorganisms, preventing acidic conditions from inhibiting microbial activity and reducing the corrosion of treatment equipment by acidic sewage. In addition, its weak alkalinity can also assist in the precipitation of heavy metals (such as Pb and Cd), reduce the content of heavy metals in sewage, and improve the quality of effluent water.

    1. 5.Other auxiliary uses
In the chemical flocculation process, sodium acetate can adjust the pH value of sewage, enhance the flocculation effect of flocculants such as aluminum salts and iron salts, and promote the settlement of suspended solids in sewage; in an anaerobic treatment environment, it can be used as a carbon source to reduce the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria, decrease the production of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and reduce odor pollution; at the same time, sodium acetate can also improve the biodegradability of sewage, accelerate the speed of biological treatment, and is especially suitable for the pretreatment of refractory industrial wastewater, creating favorable conditions for subsequent biochemical treatment.

    (II) Product Features

    1. 1.High Safety

It is non-toxic, odorless, and non-corrosive (weakly alkaline, with minimal irritation to skin and mucous membranes). It is not classified as a flammable or explosive dangerous good. The processes of storage, transportation, and dosing are safe and convenient, with no risks of explosion or poisoning. It is suitable for large-scale use in municipal and various industrial sewage treatment plants. Compared with carbon sources such as methanol (flammable and toxic) and acetic acid (corrosive), it has significant safety advantages.

    1. 2.Strong Biodegradability

Sodium acetate is a natural organic acid salt that can be completely degraded by microorganisms. Its decomposition products are carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O), which do not cause secondary pollution, leave no residues in water bodies, and will not lead to an increase in effluent COD (under the premise of reasonable dosing). It conforms to the concept of green and environmentally friendly sewage treatment.

    1. 3.Excellent Dissolution Performance

Solid sodium acetate (trihydrate) is easily soluble in water with a fast dissolution rate. Its solubility can reach 46.5g/100mL of water at 20℃, and no complex dissolution equipment is required. Liquid sodium acetate can be directly dosed without a dissolution step, enabling rapid and uniform mixing with sewage, reducing the stirring time after dosing, and improving treatment efficiency. The sodium acetate product with improved technology has a dissolution rate increased by 40% and can still dissolve quickly in a low-temperature environment of 5℃, solving the problem of dosing in winter in northern regions.

    1. 4.Wide Applicability

It is compatible with various sewage treatment processes, including biochemical treatment processes such as A²/O, SBR, MBR, and oxidation ditch. It can be used in the treatment of different types of sewage such as municipal sewage, chemical wastewater, food wastewater, printing and dyeing wastewater, and pharmaceutical wastewater. It can not only meet the conventional needs of nitrogen and phosphorus removal but also be used for emergency carbon supplementation and water quality adjustment in biochemical systems. It is suitable for the needs of sewage plants with different water qualities and treatment scales, with strong batch stability, and the molecular weight fluctuation range can be controlled within ±0.5%.

    1. 5.Balanced Cost-Effectiveness

Although the unit cost is higher than that of methanol, the overall cost-effectiveness is better when comprehensively considering treatment efficiency, safety, sludge disposal costs, and operation and maintenance difficulty. It has high denitrification efficiency, which can reduce the dosage of chemicals (saving 15%-20% compared with glucose), and the sludge output is low, which can reduce the subsequent sludge disposal costs. Long-term use can achieve a balance between efficiency and cost. At the same time, precise metering and dosing can be adopted to avoid waste and further optimize the use cost.

    1. 6.Diverse Forms, Suitable for Different Scenarios

It is available in two forms: solid (trihydrate crystal, anhydrous) and liquid. Solid products are easy to store and have low transportation costs, suitable for long-distance transportation and small-batch dosing scenarios. Liquid products dissolve quickly and are convenient to dose, which can be automatically dosed continuously through a metering pump, suitable for large-scale and continuous sewage treatment scenarios. Users can choose the appropriate form of the product according to their own treatment scale, transportation conditions, and dosing equipment.
