Cream coloured fine crystalline powder. Odorless. Soluble in water and ether, insoluble in water and alcohol.

Barbituric acid, also known as malonyl urea, 2,4,6-pyrimidinetrione, is an organic compound with chemical formula C4H4N2O3, white crystalline powder, soluble in hot water and dilute acid , soluble in ether, slightly soluble in cold water. The aqueous solution is strongly acidic. Can react with metals to form salts.

Application:

It can be used as analytical reagents, organic synthesis raw materials, intermediates of plastics and dyes, and catalysts for polymerization reactions. Several derivatives in which two hydrogen atoms on the methylene group of malonyl urea are replaced by hydrocarbon groups are called barbiturates and are an important class of sedative and hypnotic drugs.
