Physical Properties

• Appearance: White or colorless crystalline solid. It is most commonly found and handled in its hydrated form (barium hydroxide octahydrate).
• Melting Point: The anhydrous form melts at approximately 407 °C, while the octahydrate loses its water of crystallization and melts around 78–80 °C.
• Boiling Point: Decomposes before boiling, releasing toxic barium oxide fumes at high temperatures.
• Density: ~2.18 g/cm³ for the anhydrous form; ~1.57 g/cm³ for the octahydrate.
• Solubility: Moderately soluble in cold water, but highly soluble in hot water. It is practically insoluble in acetone and ethanol. Aqueous solutions are strongly alkaline.

Chemical Properties

• Strong Alkalinity: It acts as a strong base, dissociating completely in water to release hydroxide ions (OH⁻). Its aqueous solution is known as "baryta water."
• Reactivity with Acids & Gases: It readily undergoes neutralization reactions with acids to form barium salts and water. Furthermore, it reacts vigorously with carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air to form a white precipitate of insoluble barium carbonate (BaCO₃). Therefore, it must be stored in tightly sealed containers.
• Toxicity: Highly toxic. All soluble barium compounds are poisonous. Ingestion or inhalation causes severe muscle stimulation, hypokalemia (dangerously low potassium levels), cardiac arrhythmias, and respiratory failure. Strict safety protocols are required when handling this substance.
• Flammability & Thermal Hazards: Non-flammable itself, but reacts exothermically with acids. When heated to decomposition, it emits highly toxic fumes containing barium oxides.

Main Applications

• Industrial Water Treatment: Used as an effective agent to remove sulfate ions (SO₄²⁻) from industrial wastewater by precipitating them as insoluble barium sulfate.
• Glass & Ceramics Manufacturing: Serves as a crucial additive in the production of optical glass, crystal glass, and ceramics. It improves the refractive index, brilliance, and durability of the final products.
• Chemical Synthesis & Laboratory Reagent: Widely utilized as a versatile base in organic synthesis and as a primary standard in analytical chemistry for acid-base titrations. It is also used to manufacture other barium salts, lubricating oil additives, and alkalis.
• Sugar Refining: Employed in the clarification process of raw sugar and beet molasses to precipitate impurities and non-sugar substances.
