Chemical Properties

• Reactivity & Decomposition: Its chemical properties are primarily dictated by the nitrosamine functional group. It exhibits basic characteristics and reacts with strong acids and bases. Under acidic conditions or high temperatures, it readily decomposes into dimethylamine and nitrous acid. It can also undergo photolysis when exposed to light, generating nitrogen monoxide and free radicals.
• Synthesis Pathway: Industrially and environmentally, NDMA is typically formed through the reaction of secondary amines (like dimethylamine) with nitrites under acidic conditions. The indirect pathway involving an active intermediate (nitrogen trioxide) is often the primary mechanism for its formation.

Chronic exposure is strongly linked to liver tumors and other cancers in animal models, leading organizations like IARC and ACGIH to classify it as a confirmed/suspected human carcinogen.
