Product Overview

Aluminum sulfate octadecahydrate (CAS 7784-31-8) is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula Al₂(SO₄)₃·18H₂O and a molecular weight of 666.43 g/mol. It is a white crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water. Aluminum sulfate is widely used in water treatment as a coagulant, in the paper industry as a sizing agent, and in various chemical syntheses as a source of aluminum ions. It is available in multiple purity grades including 99% and 99.5% metals basis.

Synthetic Process

Aluminum sulfate is typically produced by the reaction of bauxite or aluminum hydroxide with sulfuric acid. The resulting solution is crystallized to obtain the octadecahydrate form.

Mechanism of Action

In water treatment, aluminum sulfate hydrolyzes to form aluminum hydroxide flocs that trap suspended particles. In chemical synthesis, it serves as a Lewis acid catalyst and as a source of Al³⁺ ions.
