Cyhalofop-butyl, with CAS number 122008-85-9, is a highly selective post-emergence herbicide belonging to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate (FOP) family. It is a systemic grass herbicide that inhibits acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) in susceptible grassy weeds, disrupting fatty acid biosynthesis and leading to rapid growth cessation and plant death. Because rice is naturally tolerant to this mode of action, cyhalofop-butyl provides excellent selective control of grass weeds in paddy rice without harming the crop.

It is one of the leading herbicides for the control of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa spp.), one of the most damaging weeds in rice production worldwide, as well as other annual grasses such as weedy rice, goosegrass, and sprangletop. It is widely used in direct-seeded, transplanted, and flooded rice systems across Asia, Latin America, and other rice-growing regions. The active ingredient is absorbed rapidly through the foliage and translocated to the growing points of the weed, ensuring effective control under a wide range of field conditions.

Cyhalofop-butyl is available as technical concentrate (TC) as well as in formulated forms such as emulsifiable concentrate (EC), oil dispersion (OD), emulsifiable water (EW), and granule formulations, allowing flexible application methods including boom spraying and aerial application. It can be used alone or in mixtures with other rice herbicides to broaden the weed spectrum, and its favorable toxicological and environmental profile supports its registration in many countries.

The product is compatible with standard crop protection practices in rice cultivation, offering a wide application window from early to mid-season and providing long-lasting residual control of emerged grasses.
