    —— Product Detail ——

    Product Overview

Acetic acid is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH₃COOH and a molecular weight of 60.05 g/mol. This colorless clear liquid with a pungent odor is one of the most important organic acids in the chemical industry. The anhydrous form is known as glacial acetic acid, which freezes at 16.6°C. Acetic acid is widely used as a chemical reagent, solvent, and intermediate in the production of various chemicals, including vinyl acetate monomer, acetic anhydride, and ester solvents. It is also used in food production as a preservative and flavoring agent (vinegar contains 4-8% acetic acid).

    Synthetic Process

Acetic acid is manufactured through the following routes:

    • Methanol carbonylation: Methanol is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst (Monsanto or Cativa process) to produce acetic acid.

    • Oxidation of acetaldehyde: Acetaldehyde is oxidized using air or oxygen to form acetic acid.

    • Fermentation: Biological production from ethanol or carbohydrates.

    • Purification: The crude product is purified by distillation.

Mechanism of Action / Application Principles

    • Chemical Intermediate: Used in the production of various chemicals including vinyl acetate and acetic anhydride.

    • Laboratory Reagent: Used as a solvent and reagent in various chemical reactions.

    • Preservative: Used as a food preservative and acidulant.
