Hydroquinone is methylated with dimethyl sulfate under alkaline conditions to generate dimethoxybenzene, which is then condensed with propionyl chloride with the participation of aluminum trichloride to obtain 2, 5-dimethoxypropiophenone. The latter is condensed with methyl nitrite under the action of hydrogen chloride to obtain α-(N-hydroxyimino)-2, 5-dimethoxypropiophenone, which is finally hydrogenated under palladium-carbon catalysis.
Methoxyamine intermediate.
