Description

Potassium sorbate is petitioned for use in organic livestock production as mold inhibitor
[1-3]
. Sorbic acid was first discovered in the Mountain Ash Tree (Sorbus aucuparia or Sorbus americana). Today most potassium sorbate is made synthetically. Potassium sorbate is a naturally occurring unsaturated fatty acid and is completely safe with regard to health and has the lowest allergenic potential of all food preservatives. Potassium sorbate was also petitioned for use in liquid livestock

Potassium sorbate Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Add sorbic acid to the reaction kettle, then add 66% water of sorbic acid mass, add 49% potassium hydroxide solution dropwise at 45 ℃, until the reaction solution Ph = 8, the reaction takes about 45min. Add a certain amount of activated carbon, vacuum filter, and evaporate the filtrate under reduced pressure at 40~45℃ for 3~4h to reach the required temperature. Crystals are obtained by centrifugal dehydration and the mother liquor is recovered; finally, the product is dried at 105°C.

Uses

As mold and yeast inhibitor, like sorbic acid, especially where greater soly in water is desirable.
