Phosphorus, white, dry or under water or in solution appears as a soft waxy solid with a sharp pungent odor similar to garlic. Insoluble in water and ethyl alcohol. Soluble in carbon disulfide. Shipped as a solid or liquid in an atmosphere of inert gas or as a solid under water. Barely soluble in water and denser than water. Hence, sinks in water. Uses include munitions manufacture, pyrotechnics, explosives, smoke bombs, artificial fertilizers, and rat poisons. Density approximately 15.2 lb / gal.

Tetraphosphorus Use and Manufacturing
1. Mainly used in the production of phosphoric compounds such as thermal phosphoric acid, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus pentasulfide, etc. Raw material for rat medicine. A small amount is used to produce red phosphorus and phosphorus pentoxide. Militaryly used to manufacture incendiary bombs, tracer bombs, smoke bombs and signal bombs. It is also used in the production of ferrophosphorus alloys and pharmaceutical organic raw materials. 2. Used as raw materials for special matches and for the manufacture of phosphoric acid, phosphate, pesticides, signal bombs, etc.
