CALCIUM SULFATE is non-combustible. Decomposes to give toxic oxides of sulfur, but only at very high temperature (>1500°C). Generally of low reactivity but may act as an oxidizing agent: incompatible with diazomethane, aluminum, and phosphorus. Certain forms of calcium sulfate react with water; others do not. INSOLUBLE ANHYDRITE or dead-burned gypsum is made by the dehydration of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) at high (> 600°C) temperature. At room temperature, insoluble anhydrite dissolves very slowly to the extent of 0.24 g per 100 g of water and does not absorb moisture from the air. SOLUBLE ANHYDRITE, which is obtained by heating calcium sulfate dihydrate at a temperature below 300°C, has a high affinity for water and is used as a desiccant. Soluble anhydrite absorbs water to form calcium sulfate hemihydrate (Plaster of Paris).

EXPTL USE (VET): EXPERIMENTALLY, STERILE PELLETS HAVE BEEN USED SATISFACTORILY TO HELP REPAIR BONE DEFECTS & CAVITIES SUCH AS THOSE LEFT BY WOUNDS OR TUMORS.|The use of calcium sulfate (plaster of Paris) has been advocated to repair bony defects because of its unique capability of stimulating osteoneogenesis. Plaster of Paris can be used as a bony alloplast and it can be analyzed histologically. Sinus roentgenograms and technetium Tc 99m medronate bone scanning further support the use of plaster of Paris as an alloplast and assess its osteoneogenic capacity when implanted in the frontal sinus of dogs; complete bone regeneration was demonstrated in six dogs within four to six months. The use of plaster of Paris for bone reconstruction in the head and neck can be applied in surgery. The experielce with plaster of Paris to date although limited shows it to be safe and highly encouraging as an effective bone allograft.

Calcium sulfate (or calcium sulphate) is the inorganic compound with the formula CaSO4 and related hydrates. In the form of γ-anhydrite (the anhydrous form), it is used as a desiccant. One particular hydrate is better known as plaster of Paris, and another occurs naturally as the mineral gypsum. It has many uses in industry. All forms are white solids that are poorly soluble in water. Calcium sulfate causes permanent hardness in water.

Drug Function and Efficacy
Calamine has antiseptic and astringent effects. Musk and borneol have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antispasmodic and inter-tissue penetrating effects. Ox bile paste mainly contains bile acid and bilirubin, which has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and detoxifying effects. Pearl mainly contains calcium carbonate, and trace elements include aluminum, copper, magnesium, manganese, sodium, zinc, titanium, silicon, strontium, etc. According to research, it has anti-inflammatory and anti-fog, cataract prevention and treatment, pupil constriction, and intraocular pressure lowering effects. Borax is sodium tetraborate, which has antibacterial effects and is effective in treating conjunctivitis. Amber mainly contains resin and volatile oil, and the resin contains succinic acid, succinic silver pine acid, succinoester alcohol, succinic alcohol and succinic acid.
