Description
white, amorphous solid; inert to laboratory air; can be prepared by continuous thermal decomposition of a di-t-butylberyllium ethyl ether complex in a boiling hydrocarbon; has found use as rocket fuel and as a moderator for nuclear reactors [KIR80] [MER06] Beryllium Hydride, BeH2 is an amorphous, colorless, highly toxic polymeric solid (H = 18.3%) that is stable to water but hydrolyzed by acid. It is insoluble in organic solvents but reacts with tertiary amines at 160 °C to form stable adducts,
Beryllium dihydride is a beryllium hydride.
Characteristics
0 Ų
0.650
reacts slowly with H2O, rapidly with dilute acids evolving H2(g) [MER06]
Decomposes toxic beryllium oxide fumes when heated; flammable hydrogen is easily released, which can form a dangerous fire
Safety Information
4.3
1409
Ventilated, low temperature and dry; stored separately from warehouse food materials, acids and methanol
When heated to above 220℃, it releases explosive hydrogen; reacts violently with water, methanol, and dilute acid to release explosive hydrogen
Beryllium hydride (BeH2) Use and Manufacturing
Beryllium hydride (BeH2) liberates hydrogen gas when mixed with water. It is used as a source of hydrogen in experimental rockets and fuel cells.
