Toxicity

/CONINE/ IS THE EXTREMELY POISONOUS ALKALOID...WHICH MAY BE PRESENT TO THE EXTENT OF 2% IN THE LEAVES AND UNRIPE FRUITS /OF CONIUM MACULATUM, POISON HEMLOCK/.

Drug Information

6. 6= SUPER TOXIC: PROBABLE ORAL LETHAL DOSE (HUMAN) LESS THAN 5 MG/KG; A TASTE (LESS THAN 7 DROPS) FOR 70 KG PERSON (150 LB).

CONINE HAS A NICOTINE-LIKE ACTION IN FIRST STIMULATING AND THEN DEPRESSING AUTONOMIC GANGLIA, AND A CURARE-LIKE EFFECT IN PARALYSING THE MOTOR NERVE ENDINGS TO THE SKELETAL MUSCLES.

DEATH OCCURS RAPIDLY (LESS THAN 3 HR) WITH THE MOST PROMINENT SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS REFERABLE TO PERIPHERAL PARALYSIS AND LOSS OF SENSATION. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE DROWSINESS, PARESTHESIAS, WEAKNESS, ATAXIA, NAUSEA, PROFUSE SALIVATION AND BRADYCARDIA FOLLOWED BY TACHYCARDIA. DEATH IS DUE TO RESPIRATORY ARREST FROM PARALYSIS OF RESPIRATORY MUSCLES, ALTHOUGH CENTRAL DEPRESSION MAY PLAY A ROLE AFTER VERY LARGE DOSES.|THE ALKALOIDS.../INCL/ CONIINE (FROM CONIUM MACULATUM, THE SPOTTED HEMLOCK) HAVE THE SAME ACTION AS NICOTINE.

2-Propylpiperidine Use and Manufacturing

Coniine is present in all parts of the plantpoison hemlock (Conium maculatum). It isthe first alkaloid to be synthesized and structure determined. Because of its high toxicity, its clinical application is very limited.
