Aldol condensations are sometimes fraught with side products and do not have good yields. However, your reaction works better for several reasons. What are they?
You probably added one aldehyde (A) to a solution of the other (B). B has no alpha hydrogen. B can’t undergo an aldol so A adds easily to it and self condensation of A is limited by the large excess of B always present.
