Are metal oxides weak bases?

Ben Agaran  Follow

Some are, some aren’t. Insoluble oxides of metals with low toxicity, like aluminum oxide and titanium dioxide, are essentially inert and non-toxic.

Soluble metal oxides, like sodium oxide and calcium oxide, are often strong alkalis and will cause serious chemical burns if they come in contact with your skin.

Oxides of toxic heavy metals, like lead oxides, cadmium oxide, or mercury oxides, are generally sufficiently soluble in water to be extremely dangerous.

It is important to remember that “metals” are not a monolithic group. The majority of the chemical elements are metals. They are just the elements that form metallic bonds in the pure state, and they vary wildly in their properties, chemistry, and toxicity.

Basically metal oxides are all basic in nature.

Highly reactive metals such as alkali metal oxides are strong bases.

In the periodic table as we move from left to right across the period, the basic nature of metal oxides decreases.

For example : Magnesium oxide is weak compared to sodium oxide.
