Can ibuprofen kill you?

David A Miller  Follow

When I had a lumbar injury I was prescribed 1,000 mg ibuprofen pills taken 3X daily. Note that the doctor had me in front of him, had my yearly physical reports going back years and I was very physically fit. One shouldn’t self medicate with that amount of ibuprofen.

He also told me a story about caffeine. At one time a pill for pain was made called APC which stood for, aspirin, Percocet and caffeine. Why was caffeine a part of the formula? Caffeine will enhance the effects of some pain medications. Try drinking a cup of coffee after taking ibuprofen. It worked for me.

Yes. One very large dose can kill. But over time, daily dosage of the recommended amount might eventually kill, or at least cause serious damage, including heart, kidney and gastrointestinal damage. Ulcers that might suddenly perforate, causing massive internal bleeding. Nervousness. Mental confusion. Look online for the full list.

I was taking it daily for arthritis and spinal stenosis. I stayed within the recommended dosage. At times I had gastritis with enough bleeding to make me slightly anemic. I finally stopped taking it when I was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease, although I wasn't showing any symptoms yet. I also realized that the ibuprofen really wasn't reducing the pain very much. After six months without it, some weight loss, and drinking plenty of water, my kidneys are back to normal.

Anything can kill you if you take enough of it or take it the wrong way. Ibuprofen is a blood thinner and is processed by the liver. Either one can be overwhelmed. Too much water can kill you if you drink enough to wash out all your electrolytes and stop your heart.

Yes, in fact under certain circumstances, as little as one 200mg ibuprofen tablet can cause death.

For example, A patient had just taken a shower. He dried himself off, and stepped out of the shower. There was a small puddle of water on the floor, and in that puddle sat a single enteric-coated ibuprofen tablet. He stepped on that tablet, and slipped on the wet marble floor, hitting his occiput on the marble floor and causing an acute subdural hematoma, which subsequently caused him to lose consciousness and die. All from one 200mg ibuprofen tablet.

Yes. It is life threatening if you overdose on ibuprofen. You shouldn't take more than what is directed on the label or a doctor. But most of all just don't exceed more than 6 caplets in 24 hours.

If it’s abused and taken in large quantitiesin a short period of time it can cause water build up in the brain or swelling of the brain. Ibuprofen is similar to Asprin or antasialic acid (ASA) 5 times the dosage at one time is medically threatening. You may experience nausea, returning headaches (yes excessive headache medicine can bring on headaches much worse), increased theat of brain hemarage or stroke. If you or anyone have taken too much get medical help immediately. I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFFESSIONAL.
