Does hydrochloric acid affect stainless steel?
Yes HCl affects stainless steel. Here is a catch and it is like when we use 100% pure HCl without dilution then it is less corrosive but if we add water and then it becomes more corrosive.
Reason is obvious : in dilute condition H(+) and Cl(-) are present in separate form and this Cl is detrimental as it causes pitting corrosion as well as crevice corrosion in this type of steel.

Remember there are many stainless steel alloys some more chemical resistant than others
High carbon steel can be attacked by hydrochloride acid and even much weaker acids
