How can 1 liter of 96% sulfuric acid be disposed properly?

Why would you dispose of concentrated sulfuric acid? It will keep for years and while not inordinately expensive, the shipping costs can be high.

“Sulfuric acid has to be disposed as a hazardous waste in the appropriate acidic waste container, kept closed at all times.”

Therefore, you must call the hazardous waste disposal company to come and get it.

While wearing eye protection, gently (no splashing please) and slowly pour the concentrated sulfuric acid into a large quantity of water (at least 10 times as much water as acid). Because considerable heat is generated when water and concentrated acid mix, you want a large excess of water to cool as well as dilute the mixture.

Then what do you do with the diluted mixture? It’s a bad idea to pour it down the drain (unless you’re positive you have all plastic pipes and flush with lots of water) or pour it on grass (unless you dislike grass) or pour it on concrete. Wait for a heavy rain and pour it down a storm drain.
