How can benzoic acid be tested for purity?

Reverse phase liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection is the way such testing would be done in an industrial lab.

If you are a student asking how you could do it in a school lab, then either paper chromatography or perhaps a melting point measurement could be feasible for you.

Usually the best way to establish the purity of an organic compound is by a melting point determination. Melting point determination of a compound and its derivatives is also the best way to identify an unknown organic species.

So measure the melting point of the acid…any slight impurity will result in a diminution of the literature melting point…
