Fluoromethane is a polar molecule. Fluorine is considerably more electronegative than carbon and the molecule has a net dipole moment of 1.8 Debye.

Non-polar non metal substances are normally non-conductive. Ionic solutions, which are very polar and contain charged atoms and molecules are usually highly conductive. Pure water is highly polar but a poor conductor because there is little mobility of charges in it. Its polarity is due to its strong dipole.

In the iodomethane molecule , three hydrogen and one iodine atoms are tetrahedrically arranged around a carbon atom. Carbon is somewhat more electronegative than hydrogen, while has the same electronegativity as iodine. So, very roughly, as a first approximation, one could say that the existence of a non-zero dipole moment in iodomethane can be ascribed to the three H-C bonds, whose partial dipole moments (mu) vectorially sum to give a resultant having a modulus about as large as that of any of the three H-C bonds. Actually, assuming a perfectly tetrahedral molecule, the angles H-C-I are 109.5°, and cos(180° - 109.5°) = 1/3. So, the component along the C-I axis of any partial dipole moment relative to any H-C bond is 1/3*mu, and, clearly, three such components produce mu as result.

Polar bond is the covalent bond between two atoms in which the electrons forming the bond is not equally distributed. In other words, the electron gets attracted towards the atom with more Electronegativity and slightly shifts towards it. Example, in HF molecule, the shared pair of electrons shift towards the Flourine atom because it has higher electronegativity.

Nonpolar covalent bonds are a type of bond that occurs when two atoms share a pair of electrons with each other. The shared pair of electrons lie at equal distance from the two atoms. example [math] O_2, N_2, Cl_2 [/math] etc.

Straight polarity is a term used in welding.

It occurs when the electrode used for the welding is negative and results in greater deposition of electrode material.

Reverse polarity is when the electrode used is positive. It results in deeper penetration of the metal being welded.

AC welders involve both straight and reverse polarity, since the direction of current flow switches with the AC cycle.

Look at the geometry. The molecule has a symmetry axis, on which the mean points of the positive charges (of the protons in the nuclei) and of the negative charges (of the electrons) are positioned - but not together at the same position.

(In general, the electrons of an atom are symmetrical around their nuclei, therefore with the same midpoint, but the charges in the bonds differ from that.)

The result of this difference in position is a dipole momentum of 5,4 E-30 C m or 1,62 Debye.
