How do I open a sealed lead acid battery?

Ask Australians Anything  Follow

I cut open the batteries, drained the acid (be careful, nasty stuff), then used a hacksaw to open the casing. I washed the lead plates then broke up the plates and into smaller pieces, and put the lead pieces into a pot. I then used a propane burner to melt the lead and poured into roughly made molds and used for fishing sinkers. Took the left over casing, plastic, etc to the waste facility. Also, best not to breath the fumes when melting the lead.

It depends on what you are trying to do with it. If you’re attempting to “revive” it by putting in a bit of distilled water then on the top you will find some panels. Slip something sharp into these (oooh be careful!) and you can prise them off. Underneath you will see the valves. Pop the little rubber caps off and you can drop some water etc into the cells, for all the good it will do you.
