How do zinc oxide and carbon react?

Derek Williams  Follow

Mass ZnCO3 = 5g

Molar mass of ZnCO3 = 125.4g/mol

Moles of ZnCO3 = mass/molar mass = 5/125.4

= 0.04 mol

ZnCO3 ——->ZnO + CO2

The mole ratio of ZnCO3 to CO2 is 1:1

Moles of CO2 = 0.04mol

Molar mass of CO2 = 44g/mol

Mass of CO2 = moles X molar mass

= 0.04 x 44= 1.76g

Mass of CO2 1.76g

I suspect the zinc will be reduced to zinc metal while the carbon is oxidized

zinc oxide + carbon --> zinc + carbon dioxide

And in case you need a chemical equation, here it is...

2ZnO + C --> 2Zn + CO2

A simplified answer—not fully explanatory, not conclusive, not inclusive—would be when carbon is heated with zinc oxide, the oxide releases zinc vapors or “gas”.

There’s really no end to the ways in which basic carbon might be reactive with zinc oxide: or all discovery is not listed as complete—done deal—as of now.

Through high temperatures above the boiling point of zinc. The oxygen of the oxide (zinc oxide) may be removed by heating the oxide with coke to get the metal zinc and carbon dioxide gas as by products. Conditions for the reaction favors high temperatures close to above boiling point of the metal zinc.

Zinc metal is extracted from zinc oxide by removing the oxygen atoms from zinc this is one of the method to get metals from metal oxide. Carbon can remove the oxygen atoms from metals this method is called reduction by “roasting” metal oxide with coke and metal is left and carbon dioxide is produced.

2ZnO + C → 2Zn + CO2

Hope this helps:)

Zinc oxide is reactive and can be reduced by carbon . If there is sufficient of oxygen present it will be reduced to zinc and form carbon dioxide as under

2 ZnO+ C 》 CO2+ 2 Zn

If sufficient oxygen is not present it will form carbon monoxide

ZnO + C》 CO +Zn

Carbon can reduce ZnO to zinc metal with heat.

2 ZnO + C → 2 Zn + CO2

ZnO + CO → Zn + CO2
