Sulfuric acid is commonly used in science labs. Though it has a variety of purposes and is used in numerous chemistry experiments, this corrosive acid can be extremely dangerous if not handled and stored properly. What Is Sulfuric Acid?

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is a highly corrosive chemical compound with a long history. This strong acid is diprotic. This acid was known during medieval times as oil of vitriol, though not much was known about the substance until London pharmacist Joshua Ward began the first large-scale production of sulfuric acid in 1736. Concentrated sulfuric acid is 18 molar. Its formula weight is 98.08 g/mol and its CAS number is 7664-93-9.

Common Uses for Sulfuric Acid

While concentrated sulfuric acid itself is usually considered too dangerous for widespread commercial or home use, it is used in the manufacturing process for many household products. Many large batteries (such as car and tractor batteries) use sulfuric acid to create power with a chemical reaction. It’s also a common ingredient in inorganic phosphate fertilizers. Certain drain cleaners also contain sulfuric acid, making them extremely dangerous for inexperienced users.

Using Sulfuric Acid in the Classroom

Concentrated sulfuric acid, also known as anhydrous sulfuric acid, must be used with extreme caution in the laboratory. Students should be aware of potential chemical reactions that can occur when sulfuric acid interacts with many seemingly innocuous substances. For instance, water and sulfuric acid can cause a violent reaction due to the highly exothermic nature of this reaction which may result in the mixture spitting up and causing chemical burns.For this reason dilution of sulfuric acid must always be performed by adding the acid to the water. Sulfuric acid can also produce hydrogen gas when it comes in contact with certain certain metals. Concentrated sulfuric acid reacts with sugar in an impressive demonstration known as Carbon Snake. Other popular reactions such as MOM’s rainbow and titrations can be performed using dilute forms of the acid.
