How would you separate the components of a solution where the solvent has a higher boiling point than the solute? Also, why is fractional distillation only used to separate mixtures of liquids?

I am trying to think of examples, normally the solvent is chosen for its lower boiling point relative to the reaction product. The only thing I can think of might be a reaction in water where one product is a low molecular weight organic compound, e.g. alkaline hydrolysis of an ester to yield methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol + a carboxylic acid salt. The alcohol could be distilled from the reaction mixture with a fractionating column.

The other important method that is universally applicable is chromatography, preferably HPLC. In answer to your 2nd question, just think about it, solids don’t boil, and organic solids will tend to decompose if heated enough to vapourise. Sometimes steam distillation is possible for low melting point solids.

Distillation is used when there are two or more miscible liquids of disparate boiling points that need to be separated. It is the most efficient way to separate them.

The most familiar use of distillation is in the production of liquor.

Other uses are in oil refining, chemical production, and the separation of air into oxygen and nitrogen.

In some cases it is quite easy. I fact children do this all the time. You give them a mixture of different coloured blocks and they use their eyes and color recognition to separate the mixture of blocks with their hands.

If the two different boiling points are far enough apart, fractional distillation will do the separation nicely.

They cannot be separated by distillation because distillation uses theis property of liquids to boil at a certain temperature if you have to liquid with the same boiling point then the vapour phase will be about 50% of each, thus not separating them.

First of all every liquid if cooled down solidifies so distillation separates solids that have melted. Usually the melting point is below room T so crystallization is hard to handle. If you want to test this place some benzene or cyclohexane in a flask and cool it in an ice bath then try to filter the crystals. Distillation is used to separate low melting materials that have sufficiently different boiling points and do not decompose under the needed temperatures. Sometimes especially in petroleum products such as gasoline a reasonable range is sufficient or actually necessary for the material. In any case it is a technique, useful but to be used with care when appropriate.

A solvent is chosen for several reasons to enable reactants to mix in a controlled manner, to establish a constant reaction temperature, sometimes to act as a catalyst as ether in a Grignard reaction. In any case it is usually imperative that it be removed and recovered easily and as completely as possible. The days of simply throwing it down the drain are hopefully long long ago.. If a high boiling solvent was needed and the product has a lower boiling point it seems simple to distill the product thru a short column possibly at reduced pressure. This is sometimes used to oxidize alcohols to aldehydes as the aldehyde has a lower boiling point and distills out preventing further oxidation. The process is also used to remove water from esterifications or acetal or ketal formation by azeotropically distilling a lowboiling toluene -water azeotrope.
