Is HSO4 an acid, base, or neutral?

Bob Myers  Follow

The HSO4- ion is acidic and will dissociate by the equation:

HSO4- ←→ H+ + SO42-.

Because the first ionization of H2SO4 is considered to be complete, HSO4- will not act as a base in aqueous solutions.
