If you search for the H2S/S2-/HS- versus pH diagram you will see the presence of H2S in solution is dependent on pH. The addition of caustic will ensure that the solution pH is high enough that H2S gas does not form and cause a loss of sulphur from the solution. H2S gas is toxic so be careful. The Na2S solid should have some caustic or carbonate present already, but make sure your water is not acidic.
