Is sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) an acid, base, or salt?

Dan Dunay  Follow

Sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄) is a salt. It is formed by the reaction between Sodium hydroxide (NaOH, base) and Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄, acid).

Here is the equation.

NaOH + H2SO4→ Na2SO4 + H2O

Sodium sulfate does NOT cause water hydrolysis when it is dissolved in water….

[math]Na_{2}SO_{4}(s) stackrel{H_{2}O(l)}longrightarrow 2Na^{+} + SO_{4}^{2-}[/math]

….three equiv of ions result from dissolution, and reaction with water….i.e. it is a neutral salt, that results from the reaction between the strong acid, sulfuric acid, and 2 equiv of sodium hydroxide…

[math]H_{2}SO_{4}(aq) +2NaOH(aq) longrightarrow 2Na_{2}SO_{4}(aq)+2H_{2}O(l)[/math]
