Is this chemical reaction ion-exchange or redox, Zn+2NaOH->Na2ZnO2+H2?
Zn+2NaOH→Na2ZnO2+H2
It is a redox reaction. In the reaction there's change in the Oxidation number of the reactants to form the products. In this reaction, one specie is acting as the oxidizing agent (non metals) while the other substance is acting as the reducing agent (metals and some non metals eg CO). Analyzing the reaction, the Oxidation number of Zn went from 0 to +2 in Na2ZnO2 which is Oxidation hence it is the reducing agent while the oxidation number of Hydrogen went from +4 in NaOH to 0 in H2 which is reduction hence Hydrogen will act as the oxidizing agent.
