The furanose form is less stable than the pyranose structure and it is not very common among aldohexoses. Why?
Without having a lot of supplementary material at hand, I would ask a similar question about 5- and 6-member cycloalkanes (i.e., cyclopentane and cyclohexane). Which of those two would you expect to be more stable and why? What sort of features of those two compounds would determine the amount of energy to hold them in a given configuration, which we could then relate to the ‘stability’ of such a conformation.

The six-membered ring is completely strain free; a five membered ring has ring strain and is therefore slightly strained and less stable.
