What are the chemical formulas of orthoboric acid, metaboric acid, pyroboric acid and tetraboric acids?
boric acid is an oxo acid with boron in the oxydation state three.
A meta- acid is the acid with the smallest possible relative amount of oxygen, so it is here HOBO.
This acid but will be present as a polymer (HBO2)n, because boron will not form a compound with elelctron sextet (and coordination number two), if there is another possibility.
An ortho- acid is the acid with the highest relative content of oxygen, formally formed by adding H2O once or more times to the meta form. So, here it is H3BO3.
A pyro- acid is by definition an acid with a relative oxygen content between meta and ortho. Between HBO2 and H3BO3 but you cannot fit an oxygen content other than by forming a polyboric acid. Formally, you add some monoboric acids and subtract water. Impossible for metaboric acid, because this rule would lead to B2O3, that is boric oxide and not an acid. Doing it with orthoboric acid you will get H5B2O5 - but this acid is not known, at least not as free acid.
