Manganese dioxide an inorganic compound possessing a blackish brownish colour, is used as a catalyst in the experimental production of Oxygen.It works by decomposing the hydrogen peroxide therefore increasing the rate of reaction.The compound does not take place in the reaction,furthermore,the hydrogen peroxide will be decomposed to hydrogen gas and water.

MnO2 has a relatively high catalytic activity in the decomposition of organic compounds by oxidation. Hence, for some organics that are difficult to degrade, MnO2 is a commonly used catalyst.

MnO2 acts as the catalyst in the decomposition reaction of KClO3 into KCl and oxygen gas. Its presence accelerates the reaction at a much lower-temperature breakdown.

MnO2 is also used in the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 to O2 and water for oxidation reactions purpose.

Scientists from Tokyo used MnO2 combined with certain metals as a catalyst for the oxidation of a chemical to develop a new raw material for making plastics.
