What happens if you drink NaOH?

Brian Yankee  Follow

Here’s something for you to remember: Strong acids burn, strong bases dissolve. So, if you get a strong acid on yourself, you will receive an acid burn. That is not a trivial burn. You can wind up with lifetime loss of function at the burn site. Now, if you get a strong base on your skin, it will dissolve the skin and keep dissolving until you are bleeding. You will also have damage to your organs.

Either acids or bases can be lethal. And in either case, it is an extremely painful way to lose your life.

Now that you realize that drinking strong acids or bases can kill you, seek professional medical help to make you understand why that is not a good idea—no matter what.
