What happens to plants if theres too much sulfur in the soil?
Naturally sulfur content in soil is not considered as excessive,meaning in most of the soils there is little amount of sulfur present. Rather sulfur deficiency is more common.
But there may form sulfur toxicity when sulfur is added or applied manually in excessive amount.
Excessive sulfur lowers the soil pH making soil more acidic. As H ions can be released upon the reaction of Sulfur,oxygen,CO2 and H2O, a reaction carried by microorganisms. More H ion there is,more acidic it will be.
Plants prefer slightly acidic soil around pH 5.5–6.5. Its the range where most essential elements are in available and nontoxic form. Below this range soil becomes more acidic which lowers the availability of some of the elements essential for plants and increases the availability of toxic elements.Which in turn decreasesplantgrowth .
Low pH or acidic soil may decrease the uptake of Sulfur itself by plants.
Again,the available form of Sulfur is (SO4 - -), an anion which repels the other anions (specially NO3- -). Thereby decreasing the uptake of other important elements by plants.
There are other harsh consequences when soil is acidified. Microbial existence and activities can be hampered. Soilstructure is declined.
Additional sulfur is most often applied practically in alkaline soils to lower the excessive pH and make the soil pH more favourable for plants.
