Nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent which will oxidize cu to cu2+ , main product form will be copper nitrate , depending on the concentration of nitric acid , byproduct can be nitrogen dioxide(dil. Acid) , and nitic oxide( con.acid)

Cu + 4HNO3 = Cu( NO3 )2 +2 NO2 + 2H2O

3Cu +8 HNO3 =3 Cu( NO3)2+2 NO +4 H2O

Copper (Cu) reacts with nitric acid (HNO3) as follows:

Cu + 4HNO3 ==> Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO2 + 2H2O

which is copper nitrate, nitrogen dioxide and water.

4 HNO3(l) + Cu(s) ==> Cu(NO3)2(s and aq) + 2 NO2(g) + 2 H2O(l) The coppernitrate salt that forms is a deep blue color. The nitrogen dioxide is a maroon vapor.

With dilute nitric acid, the copper is oxidised to copper nitrate and nitric oxide generated. With concentrated nitric acid you get copper nitrate and nitrogen dioxide.

Yes, depending on the concentration. Nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent. If dilute, 2 mol.'s of it reacts with 2 mol.'s of copper to form 2 mol.'s of Copper (II) nitrate solution and 1 mol. of hydrogen gas. If concentrated, nitric acid oxidises copper to form Cu2+ ions; the nitric acid is reduced to nitrogen dioxide, a poisonous brown gas with an irritating odour. I’m going to assume you mean copper…

Nitric acid is a very potent metal oxidizer so copper metal will rapidly be oxidized in a nitric acid solution, producing nitrogen dioxide, a toxic brown colored gas, and copper nitrate, which will dissolve in water.

The stoichiometry for the above reaction is Cu+4HNO3=Cu(II)(NO3)2+2NO2+2H2O

Copper is a reddish-brown metal.Which is mainly used in plumbing and electrical wiring. Copper is oxidized by concentrated nitric acid, HN3,the result is that it produces Cu2+ions, the nitric acid is reduced to nitrogen dioxide, a poisonous brown gas with an irritating odor.When the copper is first oxidized, the solution is very concentrated, and the Cu2+ product is initially coordinated to nitrate ions from the nitric acid, giving the solution first a green, and then a greenish-brownish color. When the solution is diluted with water, water molecules displace the nitrate ions in the coordinate sites around the copper ions, causing the solution to change to a blue color.
