What happens when we add HCl to H2O2?

Daryl Storey  Follow

A redox reaction occurs.

Based on standard electrode potential of chlorine and hydrogen peroxide, chloride ion will be oxidised by H2O2 to form chlorine gas. However, water produced from reduction of H2O2 will react will chlorine gas to form HCl and HOCl.

Hence in overall, HCl reacting with H2O2 will yield HOCl and water

The reaction equation occur as following:

HCl + H2O2 = Cl2 + H2O2

Actually, won’t much too dangerous if you use both reagents under small concentration, but let careful with careful with Cl2.
