What is a kg mole? What is the difference between a kg mole, a kilo mole, and a mole?

A kgmole is the same number of moles as the number of grams in a kilogram, which is to say 1000 moles.

A kilomole is 1000moles, so it’s the same thing as a kilogram mole.

A mole, or occasionally a gram mole for consistency in the kgmole lbmole etc. naming scheme, is an avogadro’s number of something, much in the same way that you might say a dozen eggs.

So why is this? Scientists and chemists and what not were having fun with their moles and what not, and it made sense. In a lab setting, you’re normally not working with kgs worth of anything, so moles are an appropriate count measure. Engineers and others who were concerned with counts on an industrial level were not satisfied, so, what did they do? They defined their own count units!

They defined lbmole, kgmole, gmole, and others such that…

1ggmol=1lblbmol=1kgkgmol[math]1ggmol=1lblbmol=1kgkgmol[/math]

See the pattern yet?

Great question. kg-mol and lb-mol and ton-mol are variations of moles that we Chemical engineers learn and use on a daily basis while the chemists of the world tend to avoid. So assuming your a ChE student and are familiar with “dimensional analysis”. I’m going to quickly cover “mole” from a chemistry perspective and the other moles and how they relate.

By now you should know that a “dozen” = 12 of anything. A “pair” = 2 of anything. A “bakers dozen” = 13 of anything. A “gross” = 144 of anything. The terms dozen, pair, bakers dozen, and gross are called “numerical determiners” in the English language. They describe a “quantity” of whatever in a set of that whatever. And “mole” is just another numerical determiner with the value 6.02214076x10^23 of anything.

so.

  • 1 dozen donuts = 12 donuts
  • 1 pair donuts = 2 donuts
  • 1 bakers dozen donuts = 13 donuts
  • 1 mole of donuts = 6.022x10^23 donuts (rounded to 4 sig figs)

easy enough. right? let’s continue with atoms and molecules.

  • 1 dozen C atoms = 12 C atoms
  • 1 mole of C atoms = 6.022x10^23 C atoms
  • 2 mole of CO2 molecules = 12.044x10^23 CO2 molecules

still simple right? now let’s toss in “molecular”, “atomic” and “molar masses”.

We know from definition that 1 AMU (Atomic mass unit) = 1.660x10^-24g. That’s the definition of atomic mass units. And we know that 1 mole = 6.022x10^23 entities. So we can write the simple conversion.
