Glucosamine is the 2-amino substitution derivative of glucose

If you then condense lactic acid at its’ secondary hydroxyl; with the glucosamine 3- hydryoxyl; you get muramic acid.

Finally; if you then form the amide on that amine nitrogen ,with acetic acid; you get n-acetylmuramic acid.

NAM is one of the two repeating units of bacterial peptidoglycan; the other being NAG (N-acetylglucosamine).
