What is the best solvent for removing tar?
You may like to try using toluene, petroleum ether or hexane (probably in that order)… but it does depend on what you’re trying to remove the tar from and whether you are worried about losing and paint or dye from the material below. So if this is from fabric, you may like to first test any solvent out on a piece of the fabric that’s not seen.
The other problem with solvents is that they can also cause stains to spread. So it would be a good idea to be a little careful about how you apply the solvent – e.g. put absorbent tissue below and use a cotton swab to clean.
If you’re trying to remove paint or tar from a car body, then I’ve found that a light oil like WD40 is often enough (with a little work with a cloth) and certainly won’t remove any of the car’s own paintwork.
