What is the byproduct when PCl5 reacts with ROH?
If phosphorous pentachloride reacts with alcohols or phenols, the by-products are phosphorous oxytrichloride, POCl3, and hydrogen chloride, HCl.
The fifth chlor atom replaces the hydroxyl.
Compare this reaction with the reaction of phosphorous pentachloride with ketones, giving phosphorous oxytrichloride also, but both the fourth and fifth chlorine replaces the =O and a geminal dichloride will be prepared.
