All steroids are related to a characteristic molecular structure composed of 17 carbon atoms—arranged in four rings conventionally denoted by the letters A, B, C, and D—bonded to 28 hydrogen atoms.

They come from modifying the testosterone molecule. Testosterone is perfectly balanced 50% androgenic and 50% anabolic, but when you’re interested in muscle growth, you could care less about secondary male characteristics such as hair and deepening of your voice. All you care about are the anabolic effects. So when creating steroids, they are cleaving off the androgenic properties, although all steroids have some androgenic properties remaining.
