What is the common name of sodium thiosulphate?

Thiosulfuric acid (as sodium thiosulfate) has the chemical name thiosulfuric acid, disodium salt, pentahydrate. The chemical formula is Na2S2O3•5H2O and the molecular weight is 248.17.

Anyone who has ever developed their own photographs in the past, will know that the common name for sodium thiosulphate is “hypo”. It is used as a photographic fixer.

The name “hypo” comes from the original chemical name for sodium thiosulphate which was; hyposulphite of soda.
