What is the current drug closest to Quaalude?

I would argue that Meprobamate is the closest currently legal drug to Quaalude.

Quaalude (Methaqualone) is a non-barbituate, non-benzodiazepine sedative and anxiolytic medication, with barbituate-like effects, and a formula of C16H14N2O.

Meprobamate is also a non-barbituate, non-benzodiazepine sedative and anxiolytic medication, with barbituate-like effects, and a formula of C9H18N2O4. While Meprobamate is still sold in the US, it has been pulled from the market in Europe and Canada due to concerns about the abuse potential and lack of therapeutic efficacy. Meprobamate was also widely abused in the US and is thought to be the ‘little yellow pill’ referred to a “Mothers Little Helper” in the Rolling Stones song.

Valium, on the other hand, is a benzodiazepine, and does not have barbituate-like properties , and contains CL, unlike Quaalude and Meprobamate. While it also has substantial abuse potential, its therapeutic efficacy is much higher.

Meprobamate is the closest drug to Quaaludes. Qualudes not only is a sedative, but has hypnotic properties as well. It's a seldom prescribed medication anylonger because of it's past record of abuse with so many other choices for sedation without the hypnotic effects…even Benedryl.

You know, based on experiences including my own, I would think Ambien.

Now, I've never done Quaaludes, but I know what it makes you do. Apparently on Ambien you can do all those things, yet have no memory of it.

Quaaludes has been used by many people as a date-rape drug so I would not ever suggest variations to people to encourage sexual intercourse without consent. Regardless of whether the request is innocent or not, me enabling a potential user (or purchaser planning to make someone else ‘use’ unwittingly) could effectively be me enabling rape myself.

Interesting question and one that, despite my healthcare background and substance abuse training, I had to research a bit...

Quaaludes, also known as Methaqualone, were widely available in the 1970s, and as you already know, they are illegal in U.S. now, and have been for decades.

That said, benzodiazepines (such as valium) have replaced quaaludes and is the closet legally available drug to them in the U.S.

I hope that answers your question:)

I don't have the answer. But I will say the other answers provided just need to get to the point. Lmao!!! Nobody asked for the life history or chemical compounds for Quaaludes. The question was “ What is the closest drug to Quaaludes?” Just give a simple answer like….Xanax. That's it. Lol!!!! Not saying Xanax is the closest drug to it. I'm just saying its a simple question that needs a simple answer. Not the whole damn history of Quaaludes. Lmao!!!

I would say Mebroqualone or Mecloqualone or Etaqualone. I love Mebroqualone, I tried it once but I haven't had access to it again.

Mebroqualone is a quinazolinone-class GABAergic and is an analogue of mecloqualone that has similar sedative and hypnotic properties to its parent compound, resulting from its agonist activity at the beta subtype of the GABAa receptor. It was originally synthesized in the 1960s. Mebroqualone differs from mecloqualone by having a bromine atom instead of a chlorine on the 3-phenyl ring.
