What is the first aid for spilling a spirit of salt on the skin accidentally?

Spirit of salt is the obsolete name for hydrochloric acid.

As one of the other respondents has pointed out, you should always wear protective gear when handling it and other corrosive chemicals.

Human skin is surprisingly resistant to acid: it coagulates the proteins in your skin and this forms a barrier which prevents the acid penetrating. Alkali is much worse: it dissolves the proteins and penetrates very deeply.

Do not try to “neutralise” an acid burn by applying an alkali!

Otherwise basic first aid principles apply. Rinse the affected area under running water for at least 15 minutes. If the skin is red but intact, apply a moisturising cream and a light dressing. If the skin is broken, damaged, blistered or bleeding you must seek medical attention immediately.

You shouldn’t be working with hydrochloride acid without the proper protective equipment and training. It’s very corrosive to human skin and will cause permanent damage.

Remember that trauma based shock is literally a symptom of every thing. This can be an emotional or physical injury, and treating for shock even when you can’t do anything else can save a life. WARTS saves lives! I use this almost daily at work, and am that person at a party who puts all the sleepers in the recovery position. It is far more important to have blankets in your first aid kit than butterfly stitches or splints.

Lots of running water is the immediate first aid but get it checked as you may need plastic surgery.

Cool the burn by flushing it with cool water, protect the area (cover with loose clean bandage), take something for pain, if needed, go to doctor, ER.

“Spirit of salt” is an antiquated term for hydrochloric acid. This can cause serious burns. The first aid recommendation is to immediately flush or rinse all areas of the skin that came in contact with hydrochloric acid continuously with fresh water for 15 minutes, and remove any clothing that may also have been saturated with the chemical, and get the person to the nearest hospital or walk-in emergency clinic ASAP.

It is not clear what you mean by “spirit of salt.” Lots of water usually does the trick.

Immediately wash it off under cold running water for at least 20 minutes, then cover with dry sterile dressings and a bandage. Go to the Emergency Room for further treatment. This is serious stuff.

If you mean hydrochloric acid you need to flush the area with water immediately for at least 15 minutes. Then wash the area with antiseptic soap and apply antibacterial cream then seek medical aid.
