What is the full-balanced equation of sodium oxalate + potassium permanganate + sulfuric acid?

The overall balanced equation should be:

5Na2C2O4 + 2KMnO4 + 8H2SO4 = 5Na2SO4 + K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 1OCO2 + 8H2O

Sodium oxalate initially reacts with sulphuric acic acid to form sodium sulphate and oxalic acid.

Na2C2O4 + H2SO4 = Na2SO4 + H2C2O4 (oxalic acid) ……………………. (1)

Now, oxalic acid is oxidised by potassium permanganate in the presence of excess sulphuric acid to carbon dioxide.

2KMnO4 + 5H2C2O4 + 3H2SO4 = K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 10CO2 + 8H2O …………(2)

When equ.(1) is multiplied by a factor of 5 and then combined with equ.(2), we get the overall balanced equation as given above.

In general you don't want a big tub of "nasty stuff". Let's say you wanted to mix nitroglycerin (nasty) with paper (nicer). If you have a big tub of nitroglycerin and you very, very, very, very, carefully add paper your death is guaranteed, but if you had a big tub filled with paper and gradually added the nitro you might only lose a finger. ;)
