What is the hybridised state of carbon bonded to a halogen atom in benzyl chloride?
The carbon attached directly to halogen in benzyl chloride is clearly sp3-hybridized as compared to the carbon in the benzene ring. It cannot be sp2-hybrodized because it has 4 sigma bonds and 0 pi bonds and it cannot undergo any resonance with the benzene ring also.

Since the carbon is bonded to 4 atoms via a sigma bond and it has no lone pair so hybridisation is sp3 with tetrahedral shape .
